"Life in the digital now"

The speech that Abha Daweser held at TEDGlobal 2013 was so inspiring and I agree with so much of it. When she spoke about hurricane Sandy I was almost frightened about how we as the human race are so caught up in technology and the digital now. That people are willing to stand in the middle of the street in the rain charging their phones to get connected to the rest of the world. Maybe they were just trying to reach their family but I am sure some of them were working, checking emails and tweeting.

What also scared me is that I realized how dependent I actually am of technology. The first thing I do every morning is check my Instagram, sometimes even before I go the bathroom! If the Internet is down or really slow I get aggravated and try everything to fix it. My boyfriend gets especially angry when this happens because he is a huge gamer.
When I think about this behavior it gets me sad that we are so caught up in the digital world that we can’t function properly without it.

When I was in London a couple of weeks ago I didn’t have Internet or free Wifi at all times. I wasn’t constantly connected to Facebook or Instagram and I actually enjoyed it. It was nice not to think about technology and not get stressed out over emails popping up. Maybe this was because I was on holiday and couldn’t be bothered but I didn’t think about updating my page and that felt good.
Now days pretty much all of us have a cell phone, so how about instead of tweeting or writing on Facebook we could call each other?

  1. Hello Kajsa!

I've read your reflection and I want to raise the point that Dawesar made in the end of her talk. You always have the choice to use technology and I really recommend trying to lay off it for a couple of days, especially since your trip to London affected you in a positive way.

Good read and intelligent discussion about the topic and hand!

  2. Hi!
I totally agree with you though I am not so connect as you seem to be. Try now and then to not use your phone for one day and you will experience something unique!
And yes, I think we are more dependant to technology than we think we are.

  3. Hi Kajsa,

When I saw the speak that Abha Daweser made I felt the same way as you describe, to start with. It feels a bit sad, thinking about how much time we (at least I) spend with different kind of devices to check my email, facebook, play games on and so on. I could really relate to what she said. But I decided to focus on the last part of her speak, when she spoke about different kinds of time, and about the time I have here and now. I think we must be aware about what is important. The digital time can be important, specially when you are working or studying, but here and now will never come back. So in the end it´s up to everyone to make their own decision about how to use their time, in the digital time or in the real time.

  4. Hello Kajsa!

Interesting thoughts about technology. I myself often find that the cell phone, computer and Ipad has a greater impact on my life than I intend for them to have. This need is what I call a timethief.

When you have the chance to spend time with your family, maybe that time is wasted om endless youtube-clips or just following the news-stream on facebook. This feels wrong but it has become an everyday habit.

Sometimes I leave the phone at home with purpose just to feel the freedom that gives. I can recommend it.

Your writing is very good and I cannot find any errors so far.

Have a nice day! / Johan

  5. Hi
I have read your entry and I agree with you. When you said that about how we as the human race are so caught up in technology and the digital now.
But I don't really know that why you are afrid when we are surrounded by technology?

  6. Hi, I totally agree with your idea that "we are so caught up in the digital world that we can’t function properly without it".

Sometimes my alarm clock could wake me up but unable to make me get up. However, if I check my email and my whatsapp messages after hearing the alarm clock, I will be awake completely! How horrible it is!

I fell we could actually lose a bit connection with the digital world (like you did in London) if we are determined. The fact we could not easily get rid of it is that we always find excuses for using it. Think how much time we really devote it to study or work. Another reason in my viewpoint is that we do not found many interesting things in our real lives. Thus we should discover more about the beauty nearby mindfully :)

  7. Hello Kajsa!

I agree with you about how dependent we are today by technology. I feel the same way about how dependent I am, for example, the internet and to be in contact all the time with my friends via social media such as Instagram and Facebook. And yes, I agree with you that it's a little scary when you think about how dependent we have become by the technology that is available today.

    Have a great day!

  8. Hello Kajsa.

I don't think that people understand how dependent/addicted they are of technology. I don't think that you are the only one that feels this way. I personally am higly dependent of technology and connectivity due to my line of work, I am a Computer Scientist. So I do all of my work on a computer and online, I have conferences and meetings with a program called lynq instead of meeting a client face-to-face and I believe that this is a bad thing but it's just to convenient to change.
But I also think that people should try to distance themselfs from connectivity and find out how this effects them.

    Regards Max.
